Looking Ahead
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
I usually take the same route to work daily—Route 280 West to Exit 10 and then Northfield Avenue. Anyone familiar with Northfield Avenue in West Orange will know that every block has a traffic light as you approach the Turtle Back Zoo area.
One morning, while driving to work, the traffic light at the corner of Northfield and Sheridan Avenue was red; however, my focus was on the other lights ahead of me that were green. I almost ran the red light because I was not focused on my position, which was to stop.
This is how it is in our lives on a daily basis. We are so busy looking ahead instead of focusing on what is ahead. Sometimes, God wants us to pause where we are, to focus and appreciate what we have right now, instead of looking ahead to what life could be like if we only had certain things in our lives. We do not know what tomorrow holds for us. We cannot predict the future. Only God knows what our future holds. He makes the final decisions on what happens in our lives. So, let us leave the future in God's hands because only He knows what is best for us.
God said in His word, "Be still and know that I am God." [Psalm 46:10]
Sometimes, God wants us to appreciate what we currently have before moving us to the next level or stage in our lives. More often than not, waiting involves a lot of stress – especially when we don't know how long it will be until the holding pattern ends.
During the wait, we sometimes turn away from God and yearn for a time when things felt easier. But what if we turned towards God and looked forward instead? Our God promises us a glorious future if only we, as Christians, can find the strength to wait – even when it's difficult.
Faith Step:
Where are you, or what level of faith do you currently have? Is God speaking to your heart to pause or take a little break before moving you to the next level in your life?
Prayer:
Father God, we give you praise today for all the many blessings you have bestowed upon us. Help us to stay focused on you and listen to your voice telling us to be still. To be satisfied in our current place or situation until you see it fit for us to move to the next level or phase in our lives.
Amen!
