Let Us March On Till Victory Is Won
"Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." — Galatians 6:9
We’ve sung "Lift Every Voice and Sing" for years, but I believe that in the last couple of years, especially this year, this song has become more than just an anthem—it is a testimony to the experiences of our Black siblings in America. It is a song of faith, struggle, and resilience, reflecting the very essence of Black life history.
The lyrics tell the story of a people who have endured the horrors of slavery, the weight of segregation, and the continued fight against racial injustice, yet through it all, they have held on to hope. Lift Every Voice and Sing is not just about looking back; it is a call to action—a reminder that the fight for justice and equality is not over. Black history and this song are deeply connected, both serving as road maps of where we’ve been, where we are, and where we must go.
Reflecting on these words and their connection to our collective history, we must recognize that Black history is not just a story of struggle but also triumphs, innovation, and unwavering faith. It is not a separate chapter of American history but a central thread woven into the fabric of this nation. That is why Black history must be acknowledged, celebrated, and taught—not just in February but every day.
Why We Need Black History Month More Than Ever:
Although I acknowledge that there are many more, these five truths about why we need Black History Month urge us to take action. That action requires us to continue marching forward. This call to march is not just about physical movement; it’s about spiritual endurance. We march on when we educate ourselves and others about our true history. We march on when we confront injustice in our communities. We march on when we mentor the next generation, ensuring they know they are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God (Psalm 139:14).
The journey is not always easy. There will be moments of weariness, times when the weight of systemic oppression, personal struggles, or societal indifference may feel overwhelming. But Galatians 6:9 reminds us: Do not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Our ancestors pressed forward when the odds seemed impossible. We, too, must carry the torch of faith, justice, and unity.
So let us continue to march on—through education, through advocacy, through faith, and through love—until victory is truly won!
Prayer: God of our weary years and our silent tears, we thank You for the strength of our ancestors, the wisdom of our leaders, and the courage You have placed in our hearts. Help us to march on in faith, in truth, and in love daily. May we never grow weary in doing good, knowing that victory is assured in You. Amen

Why We Need Black History Month More Than Ever:
- To Honor the Contributions of Black Americans – Black people have played a crucial role in shaping every part of American society, from science and politics to art and activism. Recognizing these contributions ensures that their legacies are not erased or overlooked.
- To Correct Historical Misinformation and Gaps – For too long, mainstream history has focused on a single narrative, often leaving out the full truth of Black experiences. Black History Month helps fill in those gaps and tells the complete, unfiltered story.
- To Inspire Future Generations – When young Black children see themselves represented in history, they gain confidence in their ability to achieve greatness. It is a reminder that they stand on the shoulders of giants and are capable of leaving their own legacy.
- To Challenge Racism and Inequality – Understanding Black history is crucial for dismantling racial injustice. It serves as a reminder of how historical systems of oppression continue to shape our present and urges us to strive for a more just and equitable society.
- To Celebrate Resilience and Triumph – Black history is not just about pain but perseverance, innovation, and triumph. It is about a people who have overcome the impossible and continue to shape the world in meaningful ways.
