THREE ICE CUBES

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved.” [Psalm 55:22 NIV]

I took the liberty of purchasing two orchid plants last month even though I have a terrible record of accomplishments with indoor plants. Their stunning blooms and larger-than-life personality was hard to resist. I read the instructions carefully and the key to maintaining the orchids is lots of sunlight and three ice cubes on a weekly basis. The ice cubes will provide the plant with a steady stream of water that will not overwhelm its delicate root system.

Just pause for a moment and think, just three pieces of ice cubes will provide the plants the necessary nutrients needed for survival. Now let us think about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity that means there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons – [The Father, Son and Holy Spirit]. Not only does God sustain us as individuals in times of distress, but He also sustains all things in the universe.

Whatever season we are experiencing right now, whether good or bad, God is there to sustain us. Yes, even in those hard…unbearable…times of suffering. In the NIV translation, Psalm 55:22 reads “Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall.”  The King James Version writes it like this, “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”
What joy to know that our Heavenly Father supports us physically and mentally? It is comforting to know that the Lord is the one who sustains us in the good times and the bad. We are not to look to our own strength to sustain us, because our own strength would fail us. Our strength is found only in the Lord. Just like how we need the sacrifice of Christ to cover our sins, we are too weak to rely on our strength to get through times of suffering and therefore, we must look to the Lord to be our strength. We must continually cast our cares on the Lord because He cares for us. [1 Peter 5:7 NIV]

As we celebrate this Advent Season, let us keep our eyes on the Prince as we celebrate the Savior’s Birth and wait in anticipation for His return. We have a Savior who is three-in-one who can gradually provide sustainable nutrients for our body, mind and spirit depending on our circumstances if we allow Him. He is the way, truth and life. He is the sustainer of life. He is the Alpha and Omega, He is the beginning and end. God has promised us the springs of living water. All we have to do is to let His Holy Spirit permeate into our souls. Jesus is the initiator and sustainer of life. He says that if we are not in Him, we will suffer eternal death, but if we rest in Him alone, we will live forever.

Cast all of your cares on the Lord…rest in Him. We need to focus our minds and hearts on His promises. We need to trust that He can uphold us, and we need to show our trust by our willingness to obey Him. As we center our lives on following, obeying and pleasing Him, we will experience the perfect peace He promises. Let us not lose sight of the reason for the season. Yes, it is wonderful to put up all the fancy decorations; but at the end of the day, our focus should only be on the birth of our Savior, the baby that was born in a stable. Our Savior left His throne up above to come forth as a human being, walked the earth for thirty-three years; persecuted and hung on the cross for our sins so that we can be saved.

Faith Step:
When we feel we are falling apart or have nothing left to give, we must turn to the only source of unending and sustaining strength. God is the sustainer, and He wants us to come to Him for help. We are His creation, which means God knows exactly how to hold us together. Always remember, it is God who sustains us through every season.

Let Us Pray:
O God, you are our sustainer of life, we humbly thank you for the precious gift of your existence, for the breath in our lungs, and the beat of our hearts. In your infinite wisdom, you uphold all creation, and we acknowledge your constant care in every moment. May we live with gratitude for the life you have bestowed upon us, may we use it to serve you and others with compassion and love. O God, we want to bask in Your presence, today and every day, because we know that only You can sustain us. O God, you carry us through the beautiful times and the hard times, through the triumphs and trials, through the tears and the laughter. May we always feel Your presence, because Your presence is the only place we can find true joy, hope, peace and all the other good things in life. Thank you for being so gracious to us. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
